Our YAM God

A yam is not a sweet potato. The yam is a black-skinned root vegetable with bark-like skin, native to Africa and Asia. In parts of the United States, we use the words interchangeably, but they are not one and the same.

The same is true of our God. Many people confuse him with money, happiness, or a season of the year. However, he is none of those things.

Like our God, the yam is a staple source of food, one whose name actually means “to eat.” Like the yam, our God is our source of sustenance, and without him we cannot live.

Let’s look at our YAM God:

Y – He brings us the vigor of YOUTH once again.

Psalm 103:5 proclaims the goodness of our eternal God, for he will satisfy us with good things, so that our YOUTH is renewed like that of the eagle on wing.

A – He APPEARS to us in all his magnificence.

Numbers 20:6 reveals what God wishes from us. Moses and Aaron fell to their faces before God, and the glory of the Lord APPEARED unto them.

M – He MEASURES out to us more than our cup can hold.

Ephesians 4:7 encourages us to be prepared for the glory of Jesus’s grace, for it will be MEASURED out to us according to the gifts of Christ.

What can we learn from this? The things of this world are good, as are the sweet potatoes we consume at mealtime. However, it is our YAM God that provides the sustenance that enables us to survive and prosper in our faith.

When we dine on God, we become fat with his goodness and grace.
