A Fixed Point in Jesus

When a farmer plows a field, it is easy to skew the plow sideways, getting the rows out of alignment. This wastes valuable crop land, creating pockets of unusable soil that will not be prepared to receive the seed.

The farmer’s solution? Find a fixed point at the far side of the field and keep his eyes on it the entire time he goes down the first row. Then he will have a benchmark enabling him to line up all his other rows.

In the final chapters of Mark, Jesus’ earthly life had reached its end. There was no fixed point for the disciples to find. Jesus had been crucified on the cross and placed in a tomb made from rock.

What was to keep their rows from skewing sideways, leaving pockets of their lives unplowed, unprepared to receive the in-working power of Jesus in his coming glory?

The two Marys knew the answer. They knew where their fixed point was. They had no trouble keeping their eyes on the prize. Mark 15:47 tells us their response to Jesus’ death and burial.

“And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph beheld where he was laid.”

Sure, they still did not understand the full picture, but the farmer aligning his plow does not see the full field of wheat, either. He starts with one thing in his mind: that fixed point.

The same is true for us. God may not give us the full picture, just the revelation that there is a picture. He simply needs us to get started on the journey. He allowed his Son to be lifted up on a cross in order that we might have a fixed point of reference to keep our row lined up straight and true.

When we keep our eyes on Jesus, we will always reach the prize.
