What We Cannot Keep

Life is a series of evolving moments, none of which can ever be recaptured or relived. Once we live through a day, we become different people, affected by our experiences. We are changed in minute ways into someone new.

Change is a part of life, and it is foolish to try to hold to that which is gone forever.

We see this most clearly in young children. The behavior that is so cute in a six-month old disappears in a week. The toddler amuses us with her wobbly gait, but soon she gets the hang of it. We remove the training wheels, and before we know it our son is entering a Motocross event, biking to victory against his competitors.

Jesus tells us what to expect from this life in John 21:18. When we are young, we have the ability and freedom to go and do as we please. However, the day will come when age will take those freedoms from us.

Why is it we have so much difficulty in giving to Jesus that which we will one day lose, anyway? We cannot retain our financial acumen through the senility of old age. Our bones eventually become too fragile to scale the face of a cliff. Even our social contacts will evaporate from around us, claimed by the dust of the earth.

There is only one thing that is forever, and we must cling to it with all our might. When we hold to Jesus, we attach ourselves to the rock that remains permanently rooted in the eternal person of God. Even old age cannot take from us that which is given to us by the Lord.

When we give Jesus what we cannot keep, he becomes the one thing we can hold to forever.

Excerpt of the Day

When Jesus comes to us, we must be ready to respond to him in the moment of his passing.
