Our Footing in the Hurricane

Hurricanes are something special. They bring high winds and heavy rain, but much of the damage is caused by something much simpler.

The action of the waves undercuts foundations and can bring the largest structures down.

Those buildings with the deepest foundations are the ones that survive the pounding of the waves.

Isaiah 26:3 gives us this assurance:

“You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.”

We can understand the importance of this verse best if we first define the word steadfast.

Merriam-Webster gives us this meaning:

… firmly fixed in place

Websters also says it like this: IMMOVABLE (their caps, not mine), not subject to change.

And then, LOYAL (again, Webster’s caps), firm in belief and determination.

Now, back to our verse. We have peace when our mind is IMMOVABLE. We’ve learned to TRUST IN JESUS; we are FIRM IN BELIEF; and we are DETERMINED to follow him.

How do we gain this vaulted level of steadfastness? How do we become immovable in Jesus? How do our beliefs become so entrenched that even the strongest storms in life cannot undercut our foundation of faith in God?

Here are three ways:

1. Fellowship with other Christians. Talk with them. Discuss the Word. Become enmeshed in what God is doing in their lives.

2. Dedicate time to reading and studying the Word. Apply it to your life. Let it change who you are into who God wants you to be.

3. Block out time for prayer, the sort where nothing else is going on, and we can allow God to speak to us. Prayer is a two-way conversation. Our foundations grow deeper when we listen until we hear God’s reply.

Okay, your foundation’s started. Dig it as deep as you can. When the storm comes, you will still be standing when the skies clear once again.

And Jesus will be at your side.
