Speaking Our Possibilities

In an iconic space movie, one of the characters, Yoda, said, “Don’t try. Do.”

Let’s change that slightly.

In an iconic story of divine intervention, one of the principal players said, “Don’t say if. Believe.”

We read about it in Mark 9:23:

“And Jesus said to him, ‘“If you can”! All things are possible for one who believes.’”

To add some context to Jesus’ words, this is from the story about the boy with an unclean spirit brought to Jesus. The boy’s father pleaded, “Jesus, if you can do anything …”

How many times have those words slipped from our lips during moments of desperate, pleading prayer?

Jesus says, “Stop it!” It is belief that makes things that are not into things that are. How can we have the sort of faith, the belief that enables us to do mighty things for Christ?

We find that answer six verses down.

“And he said to them, ‘This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.’” (v. 29)

When we find our faith in Jesus, he becomes our source of power to do all that the Word commands of us.

Let’s draw near to him. He desires us to commune with him today.
