Slam dunk is a sports term, basketball, specifically. We thrust the ball through the net so hard there’s no chance our opponent can prevent us from making points.
It’s spread into other genres, from music to comics to slang for overwhelming success.
The Slam Dunk Festival is considered the leading yearly alternative music event in the UK.
Slam Dunk manga (anime comics) has been a hit in Japan.
You can slam dunk a business deal or be slam dunked by a wily chess opponent.
Yet slam dunk’s original meaning is the one we want to look at today.
Matthew 10:22 says:
“And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.”
This is basketball at its core. We have an opposing team whose job is to prevent us from living a successful life for Christ. They want to steal our Christian witness, foul us with misdirection, and distract us with fancy footwork.
God says that’s not allowed. Our Christian life is a slam dunk in the making. Crossover dribble, through the legs, in-and-out, hesitate, spin. Whatever it takes. Take that layup. Bank that shot. Hook it. Tip it in, jump, whatever it takes to get your Christian witness through the hoop.
God wants you to be successful, to win this game called life. He wants you to slam dunk your salvation and spend eternity with him.
Dribble it or pass it, God wants a basket! Let’s not give the devil even a chance to prevent us from making a slam dunk with our salvation.
We play on the winning team when we team up with Jesus.
