Riveted to God

English Audio Version

Rivets are an amazing way to attach objects.

We start by punching a hole in both. That’s right, the first step in riveting two items together is to weaken them by piercing them through.

Then we drive a spike through the hole and pound on it until the spike flattens out.

Nowadays we can produce a similar effect with pop-rivets and avoid the pounding, but the strongest bond is formed with steel spikes pounded on either side until the spike deforms and pulls the two surfaces together.

It’s almost impossible to break apart two sheets of metal that are riveted together.

That’s how we should be with God. When our hand is pierced alongside the hands of Jesus, and the spike that tore his skin tears ours, it becomes a rivet that bonds us together with him, and we can never be separated.

Ephesians 6:10 tells it plainly.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.”

Notice what this verse doesn’t say. We aren’t to be strong for the Lord in the strength of our might. We become strong when we are firmly attached to the Lord (riveted!), and his strength becomes our might.

When we become engulfed in Jesus’ compassion for the lost, we will become riveted to him, and nothing will pull us apart.
