Our Cornerstone

English Audio Version

Rock, paper, scissors.

We all play the game, even as adults.

Rock smashes scissors, paper covers rock, and scissors cut paper. It’s a random decision-making process in which there’s no predetermined winner. Any of the three—rock, paper, or scissors—can be the winning player when the combination is just right.

Yet, it’s rock we imagine enduring forever. It’s in the massive mountain ranges that traverse the globe. There’s nothing that lasts longer than something made from stone.

Except God’s love. Psalm 136:1 reveals the unending lengths of his compassion and concern for his creation.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”

Even rock wears away eventually. Visit an old graveyard, and the names carved into the stones will be worn, some almost to indecipherable squiggles. Timeworn European landmarks reveal the passage of centuries of feet across stone floors and passageways. In America, wagon wheel ruts in stone reveal the great migrations westward during the expansionist era of the 1800s.

If we want something that lasts, let’s turn to God. His love endures forever.
