Skiing the Powder

English Audio Version

Fresh powder is a skier’s dream.

To make a first run causes the day to be better; to be the initial skier down an unmarred slope where your tracks are the only ones is an enthusiast’s thrill.

What about free skiers? Groomed slopes are of no interest to them. They don’t want just unmarred slopes. They crave whole mountains where no skier has gone before. The danger? Bah! The adrenalin rush of off-piste skiing trumps all that.

How can they do it safely? Three things are essential. 1. They must have an innate trust in their skills. 2. They scope out their intended route with great care. 3. They prepare for all contingencies.

James 1:6 assures us we can ski the powder if we place our trust in Christ.

“But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.”

Psalm 62:7 is our promise that the Father already has our path down the slope planned, and we will not go astray when we follow him.

“On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.”

2 Corinthians 5:7 gives us confidence that our circumstances don’t dictate our salvation, for God will be there to take care of our needs.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

What do free skiers carry with them to prepare for contingencies, to ensure they complete their adventurous run safely? An avalanche transceiver, a probe for finding buried skiers, a shovel, and an avalanche airbag that deploys to keep them from being buried alive.

As Christians, we need a good church, time spent reading the Bible, hours on our knees in prayer, and friends who’ll support us when we face rough times. Our friends deploy to keep us from being buried alive when life is about to overwhelm us.

Life is a mountainside where no skier has gone before. Every day is a fresh slope that’s never been skied. When we trust God to guide our tracks, we’ll find the safe path through the snow.

When God controls our journey down the mountain, we’ll miss every tree, every rock, and every patch of ice. We’ll reach our goal in record time.
