Steady in the Boat

English Audio Version

You must have sea legs on a boat.

It’s much like riding a bike or a horse. There’s a certain rhythm to riding a bike. You lean your body from side to side, putting pressure on one pedal then another. Part of it is balance, but even more is leaning far enough sideways to even out the effort it takes to propel the bike. A really good rider learns to lean the bike from side to side even farther to increase the balancing effect.

The horse? The skill is completely different and identical at the same time. If we can’t adjust to the rhythm of the moving beast, we’ll have saddle sores and won’t be able to ride at all.

Sea legs are much like being on snow skis. We let our legs absorb the movement of the craft (or the uneven surface of the snow). Once we learn to anticipate the upcoming motion of the boat, we’ll walk around as though we’re on dry land.

Psalm 33:22 says the love of the Lord keeps us steady on the deck when we trust in him.

“Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.”

Matthew 17:20 says there is no storm that will dispatch us from the ship of salvation when our faith is rooted in Christ.

“He said to them, ‘Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.’ ”

Mark 11:23 reiterates that our spiritual sea legs give us a stability in the Lord that can never be shaken or taken away.

“Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.”

Our God is our solid rock. He’s our firm foundation, and in him we never falter or fall away.
