Our Eyes on the Heavens

It’s hard to walk in the dark.

Even if we have a flashlight, we can’t see everything. In fact, the flashlight makes the surrounding shadows even blacker than before. We are blinded by the light, and the things in the dark become invisible to us.

This would be scary in the natural, but spiritually, it’s exactly what we want to happen. When we focus on Jesus, we become blinded to the world, and the wiles of the devil become useless wailings in the night.

2 Corinthians 4:18 tells us to focus on Jesus, for he’s the only thing that lasts. When our eyes are on Christ, the devil’s shenanigans will evaporate into the mists of the darkness.

“As we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”

Psalm 37:4-5 is our confidence that following Christ leads us to better things.

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will act.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 assures us our faith in Christ will keep us from wandering aimlessly in the darkness.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Philippians 4:13 says we are mighty warriors through Christ our Lord, and in him, we can beat back the darkness from our lives.

“I can do all things through [Christ] who strengthens me.”

Galatians 2:20 paints our measure of strength, for we walk with Christ in us, and we live in light by our faith in him.

“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

We watch our feet in the natural so that we don’t stumble over the stones that clutter our path. We watch the sky spiritually, for it’s the light of Christ that will lead us home.
