Lifted Into God’s Holy Realm

Rainy weather.

On Labor Day weekend 2016, Hurricane Hermine swept ashore on Florida’s northwest coast, screaming through the state before traveling through Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and farther north.

Squalls blasted cities over a hundred miles from the coastline, as unending rain drowned roads and alleyways for over a day. Winds battered buildings, ripping screens from porches, and toppling trees in their wake. No place was safe from Hermine.

Yet the toll of the injured was minimal. The media got the word out, the places facing the severest calamities were evacuated, schools were dismissed early, and people hunkered down. We were wiser because of who we listened to, and that wisdom kept us protected.

1 Corinthians 1:26-30 tells us:

“For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption.”

We come into the world blank slates. In the natural, only a few of us reach the level of true brilliance. We make mistakes, often stumbling from fumbling failure to crushing catastrophe. How can we be of benefit to God?

When Hurricane Hermine threatened the East Coast of the United States, the citizens in harm’s way tuned in to the media, listened to the authorities, and performed admirably. The National Weather Service didn’t search for the brilliant among us to rescue the rest. We were all asked to step in, and we did an commendable job.

God doesn’t choose us for our expertise. He looks to us to be receptive, to tune in to his Word, and to step out in his truth to minister to the world. It’s not in us that we are successful for Christ, but rather through God that we achieve his will on this earth. He is our wisdom, our righteousness, our sanctification, and our redemption.

We are lifted closer to God when we let him be the one in charge of all that we say and do.
