Stars twinkle.
They are like diamonds. They resemble nothing other than the brightest of jewels, flashing their colors in the depths of space.
We love the stars. We sing the nursery rhyme: Twinkle, twinkle, little star… It’s a favorite of children across the world. However, it’s not just for children. How many adults enjoy hammock time, watching the heavens and admiring the stars as they shimmer across the sky?
Revelation 21:11 describes the New Jerusalem:
“Having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.”
The city is a star in the heavens, a diamond of brilliance, shimmering through all eternity.
Let’s read of more spiritual diamonds.
Hebrews 1:14 tells of the angels that sparkle around the redeemed who have come to Christ:
“Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?”
Just as the stars in the heavens are beautiful to behold in the darkness, so the angels who bring us the grace of the Father shine most brightly in our darkest hour.
2 Timothy 3:16 assures us:
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”
The words of God sparkle around us, glittering against the world's unbelief, and revealing his majesty.
Isaiah 40:8 goes on to say:
“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.”
The scriptures are the spoken words of God, breathed out of his mouth to fall upon the earth and be scribed upon clay tablets, reed papyrus, and tanned lambskin by the faithful prophets of old. Through the ages the Father’s glittering expressions of love and longsuffering have illuminated his eternal compassion for his children. He shines in the darkness of man’s lost condition to draw us to his Son, that salvation might be ours.
What about modern diamonds? Where are the stars in the heavens of Christianity today?
God’s diamonds today are found in our church pews, our children’s church pageants, and our youth halls. We are the stars that shine brightly in the darkness. When we step outside our church walls, we flash our colors to the lost, and they are drawn to the Christ who redeems our sins.
When Jesus is the light of our life, he will shine through us, and we will be beautiful to behold to everyone who looks upon us.
