Our Edge on the World

To have an edge is to have an advantage over our competition. If we discover a new technique for improving the mousetrap, then our product will fly off the shelves, and no one will be able to compete with us. We will have an edge on the competition.

In our Christian walk, we are in competition every day. The world screams at us to follow after the desires of man, and we have to struggle to stay on the straight and narrow path to heaven. How can we, as human beings, do the very thing we do not have the strength to do?

The secret lies in our edge on the world. We have something the world does not have. We have Jesus to walk at our side.

Let’s look at some examples from the Word that illustrate the edge we have given unto us:

Edge #1:

John 3:17 tells us Jesus came that the world might be saved through him.

When we accept the Christ as our savior, we have an improved mousetrap, one that captures sin and isolates it from our lives.

Edge #2:

Luke 16:23 talks about the rich man looking up and seeing Abraham and Lazarus. He begs Abraham to send Lazarus to his brothers to warn them about their impending doom, and Abraham refuses.

We have Jesus with us now, risen from the dead, as a witness to all who choose to believe. We don’t have to suffer the rich man’s fate.

Edge #3:

2 Peter 2:9 assures us God knows how to reward the godly and punish the guilty.

When we follow after God, we know our eventual destination. We will join the Father in heaven to worship him for all eternity.

Edge #4:

1 John 1:9 gives us our final seal of confidence in the cross, for all we have to do is confess, and he will forgive us and cleanse us completely.

The world has no such assurance. All they have are empty promises from a fallen angel that was cast out from heaven. What good are they?

God does not expect us to compete against the world without something to give us an advantage. That’s why he sent us his Son. The Law no longer worked, and Jesus fulfilled the Law in order that we might have the strength to follow after him.

When we confess our sins and walk with Jesus, we will own that better mousetrap, and the sin that has infested our lives will be bound up and tossed aside for good. We will be sin-free.

Jesus is our edge that allows us to overcome the temptations of the world.

Excerpt of the Day

Disbelief is fine. Refusing to move past it when confronted with the truth cuts God to the quick.
