Everyone wants a happy ending. The frog becomes a prince. The knight slays the dragon. The happy couple rides off into the sunset. The cowboy with the white hat always gets his man.
Even Nemo gets to go home again.
Yet where is our fairy tale in our daily walk with Jesus? Oh, sure, we know the ending of the story. All we need to do is open the book of Revelation and read it from the beginning to the end. And there are the words of Jesus, telling us that his Father has built a house with many mansions for his followers. But what about today, and what about tomorrow, when the desires of our hearts seem to slip through our fingers like sand through a sieve?
That is why God has given us his written word, so that we can see his fairy tale promises in black and white. That’s why he has written them down for us to read.
Romans 10:13 tells us that, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
What a glorious promise! We turn from a frog into a prince with that simple act of belief.
2 Peter 3:9 is our knight riding in with sword raised, ready to vanquish evil. “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”
The dragon of disbelief and depression is slain. We can stand triumphant over the evil one, for God’s victory is already ours!
Our greatest reassurance is found in Ephesians 2:8-9. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
It is not up to us to create the sunset. That is God’s gift to us. All we have to do is turn our faces his way, and God will lead us home.
That is where our fairy tale is found, in Christ. If we look for some storybook fairy tale to fill our days, we will be disappointed. Rather, we should enjoy what the morning offers, grab at our afternoons, and let the evenings bring us what joy they can. When it comes time for our sunset, God will provide. In fact, he is waiting on us, for he is already there.
Our fairy tale is Jesus, but the fact is, he is no fairy tale. Rather, he is the truth told of across the ages. He is life and the way to the Father in heaven.
