In the summer of 2013, a manhunt was initiated to look for the missing child of a woman killed in San Diego, California. A statewide abduction alert was issued. Frantic efforts ensued to locate the child while she still lived.
Hannah was lost, and she had to be found. Her father sent out a plea for his daughter to hold on, conveying his love, and assuring her she would be found.
Within days, 150 federal agents joined 100 law enforcement officers from surrounding areas. As the search continued, it soon spread as far as British Columbia and Baja California. Amber Alerts were issued in five U.S. states to help locate the girl.
Everyone wanted to find Hannah, and there was no length too far to go in order to bring her home.
What length are we willing to go to in order to find Jesus? Oh, we know the Christmas story, and new Easter clothes are high on our shopping list each spring. But the real Jesus, the one who came to offer salvation to a dying world? How about looking for that Jesus? How far are we willing to go?
John 5:39 gives us the first step in Jesus’ own words:
“Search the scriptures.”
The modern day church claims to believe in the Bible, yet we often argue about just who Jesus really is, why he came to this world, and what he wants to do for us. Did he come to offer us material wealth, vengeance against our oppressors, or simply to teach us to be “good”?
If we claim to believe in Jesus, then we should do as Jesus commanded:
“Search the scriptures.”
We need to go on a massive manhunt for the true Jesus, the one proclaimed in the scriptures as Lord of lords and King of kings. We need to search out the scriptures to find the Jesus that has been lost in two millennia of church teachings and religious dogma.
We need to find the lost Jesus.
Was Hannah ever found? Yes. In early August she turned up safe and well.
Will Jesus ever be found? Yes. All we have to do is search the scriptures in order that we can know his true nature.
If we want to know the true Jesus, all we have to do is read about him in his biography. We call it the Bible.
