The Lilies of the Field

So, your investment accounts … they haven’t done well.

That side hustle, that money you were assured … promises busted.

Even the bonus you were poised for at work was passed off to someone else.

Where is our God when we need him? Why isn’t he providing for what we want?

Perhaps that’s the problem. God’s Word doesn’t promise us everything we want …

Just everything we need.

Isaiah 40:8 reveals God’s assurance:

“The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”

Here’s what God wants us to get from this:

Our life isn’t just about our investments. If they rise in value, we can expect to reap material benefits from them, but they don’t swell our relationship with God.

Our side hustle needs to be a God hustle. Time in his Word. Volunteering at the homeless shelter. Taking care of the elderly in the church. These are the things God expects of us.

The bonus we missed … had we already spent it on expanding our life, rather than expanding the kingdom of God? Intent can spur God’s hand of blessing one way or the other.

Here’s a way to look at it. Within a handful of generations, nothing you’ve achieved on this earth will matter or be remembered. Your descendants won’t even know you were here. Our value comes through what we’ve done for the Lord. That luxury car … in the rustheap. Our vacation home, torn down for something newer. Our financial accounts, emptied by someone who didn’t earn the money and doesn’t care how quickly they burn through it.

Our only hope of assurance comes through God’s Word, for his truth is the rock upon which we stand.

God is our provider, and in him, we have all we need.

If something leads us astray, toss it aside and leave it on the side of the road.
