Living Like the Joneses

Who are the Joneses to you?

You know what I mean. Keeping up with the Joneses. Maintaining the status quo. Staying top dog in whatever competition life throws our way.

The neighbor’s new boat? We’ve got to have one with a bigger motor, more seats, and perhaps even a cabin.

The throaty rumble from their new sports car? We’ve already reserved a spot at the speed shop. We want ours to wake them up when we fire the motor.

Their son joins the football team? Hey, Jimmy, how about you attend tryouts this year?

Your daughter can sing better, wear better makeup, even get the best boyfriends.

Your dog can actually catch the milkman. Your grass is the greenest on the block. And no one has a deeper pool than the one in your backyard. You’re living the life.

But are you?

In ten years, your new boat is faded and tired.

In fifteen years, that new exhaust is rusted and leaking.

Your son graduates, your daughter is off and married, and your dog? Age takes even the sweetest pet from us too soon.

Psalm 103:15-16 tells us as it really is:

As for man, his days are like grass;

As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.

For the wind passes over it, and it is gone,

And its place remembers it no more.

Here’s the point: chasing useless things steals our life from us. Chasing things that matter will satisfy us every time.

Choose God. He is what matters in this world. Only by placing our trust in him can we find real fulfillment in our days on this earth.

Excerpt of the Day

If something leads us astray, toss it aside and leave it on the side of the road.
