A carpenter was nearing retirement to spend his time with his wife and grandchildren.
His boss, for whom the carpenter had worked faithfully for years, asked him to do one last job.
The carpenter reluctantly agreed but his heart wasn’t in it. The final job was a house of grandiose proportions, and he wanted it finished before he began. He cut more corners than he should but knew it was his last and didn’t think it mattered.
Then, upon completion of his task, his boss rewarded him with the keys to the house as his reward for his years of faithful service.
We are carpenters for Christ. We are building his kingdom on this earth. We can’t afford to cut corners, be lazy on the job, or show up late for work.
Our reward for our service to the King depends on it.
James 1:17 in the Common English Bible says:
“Every good gift, every perfect gift, comes from above. These gifts come down from the Father, the creator of the heavenly lights, in whose character there is no change at all.”
What has God assigned to you as your duty in his kingdom? Who has he asked you to pick up on the way to church? What class to teach on Sunday morning? Cash to place in the offering? Lawn to mow, visitor to invite to lunch, missionary to support?
The reward is yours. God is preparing it for you now. If this were your last job for the Father, would its quality meet his expectations?
