Our Vision of Us

English Audio Version

How do you see yourself?

Are you beautiful (or handsome), or do you struggle with your self-image?

Do you see yourself as young or old, and does that image reflect what you see in your mirror?

And elderly grandmother once quipped, “All those old people at bingo. I’m glad I look as young as I feel.”

Did she look young, or did she remember looking young? Most experts say we carry a mental image of ourselves from about our mid-twenties.

That’s why Rose in the film Titanic, upon looking in a mirror retrieved from the doomed ship, remarked, “The reflection’s changed a bit.”

She no longer looked the same as she had more than 80 years before.

It’s our inner vision that counts. Our outward appearance is fleeting and constantly changing. We are young (and ideally perfect) for only a short time.

Here’s how Job said it in Job 19:26-27:

“And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me!”

How’s your inner spiritual man or woman? Is God part of your inner vision? Do you see yourself as a follower of Jesus? Do you try to emulate him in the way he lived?

When we see God, like Job, our hearts might indeed faint if we don’t already look like him. Now’s our chance to make a spiritual difference in the world by how we live.

Let’s walk like Jesus. He’s the reflection we want others to see in us.
