Rules are the way of the soldier.
Do it this way. Follow orders.
The chain of command is paramount. The higher-ups need to trust that their directives will be followed as given, so they can move on to other vital concerns and know the orders they gave will be carried out.
What orders flow from our holy King unto us? He is our Supreme Commander. He needs to trust in us to do as he says.
Romans 12:9-10 gives us 5 Orders from Our Supreme Commander:
“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.”
Let’s showcase each of these. We’ll get a better glimpse of God’s battle plan and what it means for us.
Order No. 1:
“Let love be genuine.”
If we smile to someone’s face and gossip behind their back, we’ve sabotaged our Christian witness. Don’t do it.
Order No. 2:
“Abhor what is evil.”
Just because the world accepts something doesn’t make it right. Don’t entertain even the semblance of sin. Kick wrongdoing out the door.
Order No. 3:
“Hold fast to what is good.”
The flash of the world can be very attractive. We must be rooted in Christ and hold true to the standards in the Bible.
Order No. 4:
“Love one another with brotherly affection.”
Compassion. Time. Finances. What we offer to those in need reflects our love for them.
Order No. 5:
“Outdo one another in showing honor.”
We are to recognize the good our fellow believers do. Throw a party. Sing their praises. It does wonders to build their determination in Christ.
A good soldier doesn’t say, “I’ll follow my commander’s orders if I feel like it.” We can’t pick and choose from God’s directives. We are to follow all of them. That’s how God learns we truly trust in him.
We honor Christ when we do as he commands.
