Standing Out in the Crowd

English Audio Version

Driving a car that’s a popular color can give us a headache.

We come out of the mall and look for a tan SUV, only to find there are dozens of them.

Search for white SUVs on CARFAX, and as of late 2019, you could find 538,934 examples.

It’s no wonder people install glittery wheels, giant spoilers, and decorative stickers on their paintwork.

They want to stand out in the crowd. They want to be able to find their cars amid all the others in the lot.

Here’s what God says about standing out in the crowd. Notice the seven boldface words in the center of the passage.

We’re reading in Romans 12:1-2.

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

We can’t afford to be another car in the lot, another church member in the pews, another upwardly mobile status-seeker just like everyone else.

How will people pick us out as Christians? How will we look any different than the rest?

1 Peter 1:14-15 doubles up on our plan for improvement.

“As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.”

As obedient children. We are obedient when we study the Word of God and let it change how we live. Then we will be holy in everything we do, and we’ll stand out in the crowd and draw others unto our Lord.

Jesus is the difference that changes each of us.
