How to Grow in God

English Audio Version

Step into your garden during a dry spell.

If you don’t have a garden, give your flowerbeds a good look-see. Pay attention to the plants.

Which ones are doing best, still surviving in the heat? Those in full sun, in the intensity of the dry spell, or those near a water source, perhaps the air conditioner drain lines or a water faucet?

When our flowers begin to droop, we understand the best way to bring them back to life. Pull out the hose, put it at the base of the plants, and let it run slowly for an hour or so.

Within a short time, the plants will revive, lifting their branches once more toward the sky. They won’t mind the dry spell when they have plenty of water at their roots.

That’s how we grow in God. The world can scorch us, and it can try to wither us with the heat of many trials. It’s our roots that are our survival, and when we keep them planted in the Word of God and spend time in prayer, we will bloom in the Lord.

Psalm 1:3 paints this example in the most beautiful way.

“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

It doesn’t matter what’s happening in the sky, whether sunshine or rain. It’s the roots that matter.

It’s our roots that keep us healthy spiritually. Here are four things you can do to grow in God.

  • Get involved in a Bible study.
  • Be part of a prayer group.
  • Attend Wednesday night services.
  • Get a devotional and follow it every day.

You’ve got this. You can be a success. You will grow in God and bloom in the glory of his presence.

Jesus is our source, and we must remain rooted in him.
