How is intelligence measured?
Is it in the success of our bank accounts? Surely it takes a smart man to get rich.
Or is it in the good we do for our fellow man? Intelligence must go hand in hand with a good heart.
Ah, this must be it. The man who is truly smart must be surrounded with friends. They will recognize his leadership potential, and they will want to be near him.
All these sound reasonable, but the answer is nope, nope, and nope. They aren’t the signs of an intelligent man.
Job 28:28 gives us the insight we’re looking for.
“And he said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’”
Sometimes we need the trappings of life to be stripped away before we can truly see the simplicity of God’s love. Job lost everything, and in his loss, he found the great truth of what it means to follow God with all his being.
When we fear (respect) the Lord, we’ve started down wisdom’s path, and when we turn aside from wrongdoing, we begin to comprehend the purpose of life.
The truly smart man is focused wholly on God, for in our Lord is where life is found.
