Banks tend to be impressive edifices.
The larger the building, the more security we think they have. Who wants to bank at a location with broken windows, peeling paint, and slovenly employees? If the bank is the best, it should be able to afford the best.
Yet, in the financial crisis of 2008, some of the largest banks in the U.S. came crashing down. They were all show and no cash flow. There was no substance behind their massive facades of glass and steel. They wanted the appearance of success, but just underneath they were hollow with deception.
Matthew 6:21 reveals our financial focusing technique:
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
What’s impressive about our treasure? Is it seen in the quality of our children? Or the spouse we adore? Maybe it’s in the time we spend in church, perhaps volunteering in the choir or the nursery.
Our treasure will reveal the focus of our heart. If it’s fine cars… or a vacation home… or Saturday nights on the town… or time spent in communion with our Lord, those around us will know. We haven’t fooled anyone.
When Christ is our focus, he will come out in everything we do.
