We have an example set before us.
Lots of examples, in fact.
Of course, we think of Jesus, and he’s our number one figurehead, the one we should emulate, our prime example.
Then there’s Abraham, Moses, Jeremiah, and Paul. We can look to Timothy, Peter, and a dozen others.
They are our examples, if we want to live a life that’s pleasing to God.
Hebrews 12:1-2 says that every saint who ever lived is cheering us on.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
1 Peter 2:9-11 tells us God has picked us to be winners in this spiritual race.
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.”
2 Peter 3:18 encourages us to remain totally focused on Christ as our example and behavioral model.
“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”
1 John 3:1, 3 warns us that this world is not our role model or our home. We must keep our eyes on Christ.
“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.”
1 John 3:22 reassures us that if we mimic Christ’s example, the Father in heaven will take care of us.
“And whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.”
We don’t have to look far to find Christ-like examples. They not only fill the Word of God, we attend church with them and find them alongside us as we walk from day to day. When people match up to Christ’s expectations, we can trust them to point us to heaven.
When we model ourselves after Christ, we will shine with the Father’s love.
