In August of 2017, an eclipse of the sun cut a swath across the continental United States.
All across the country people choked highways to view the once-in-a-lifetime event. No one who could take time off work and get into the path of totality wanted to miss the chance to view the phenomenon with their own eyes.
The darkness only lasted for a minute or two, but in those moments, the air chilled, the world grew dark, and all eyes were turned to the heavens.
It was said that no one who viewed the eclipse would be the same.
That’s how God comes over our lives. The air chills, the world grows dark, and our eyes turn to him. The world fades into the background, and that’s when God can lead us. Once we’ve experienced his presence, we’ll never be the same again.
Psalm 23:1 reveals God as our guiding hand. He provides for us and gently redirects us toward his final goal.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
Isaiah 40:28-31 paints God with broader strokes. When we follow after God, we receive power and direction. He’ll renew our strength. We’ll mount up as eagles, and we’ll not feel faint when we depend on him for our guiding light.
“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
Many people just outside the path of totality thought they experienced the majesty of the Great American Eclipse. Not so. The sun is so powerful that only those directly in the moon’s full shadow could look at the eclipse with naked eyes and take in the glory of God’s majesty.
Only when we are fully in the presence of God can we experience his power. Only then can he lead us where we need to go.
In surrendering completely to God, we find his hand guides our footsteps each day.
