Sticking Like Glue

Glues have different properties. Some are designed to melt away in water, while others only stick when pressed against themselves.

Children’s glue? Edible, as small tykes tend to consume anything within their reach.

The strongest types of glue invoke a chemical reaction to create their bond. They off-gas, give off heat, and can burn our skin if we touch them before the bonding process is complete. The very best of these create a stronger bond at their point of contact than the substance they are gluing. If we break the item we’ve glued, the item might shatter, but the glued section will remain in one piece, still attached by the bonding properties of the glue.

Are we glued to Christ with the strongest of glues, or does our Christ-adhesive melt away when it’s dampened with the tears of trials and tribulations? When bad things happen to us, does our bond with him break, or does it remain steadfast, even as our lives crumble around us?

2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

No one will even remember the person we were before. That creature no longer exists. If we’re glued with the unbreakable glue of Christ, other areas in our lives will be superstrong, also.

Genesis 2:24 says:

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

We become one person, inseparable. We can’t be discerned one from another.

Matthew 19:6 exclaims:

“So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

God has applied the glue. We cannot afford to try to break it apart.

Hebrews 13:4 give us a lofty goal:

“Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.”

The world likes the glue of relationships to dissolve easily when we tire of the person we’re with. God says the glue is permanent. Our off-gassing is the love we share, the heat is the passion we feel for each other, and our relationship remains secure even when the world batters at us and destroys everything else.

It is imperative that we remain glued to Christ. Our relationships with those we love should be just as permanent.

Not even the devil can destroy our bond of redemption with those we truly love.
