Launched into Greatness

The ocean is beautiful. Visit a beach on a sunny day, and the water stretches unbroken into the distance, blue and serene. We want to walk along the shore, grateful for the handiwork of God and the joy we feel in his creation.

Then the winds arise, and we are driven from the shore. The sand bites at us, and we search for protection from the abusing elements. Surviving the rising storm is all we care about.

We enjoy the sun, but it’s the storm that brings life to the seas. We can’t surf the waves on a calm day. The air cannot be refreshed by the churning of the waters without the storm. The nutrients must rise from the seafloor for oceanic creatures to survive.

God wants to churn our waters. He wants to launch us into the greatness he knows we are capable of.

Psalms 42:7 says:

“Deep calls unto deep at the noise of your waterspouts: all your waves and your billows are gone over me.”

Deep distress brings about a deep connection with our Lord. The winds overhead may blow in wild torrents, crushing us ever deeper underneath our problems, but as we sink beneath the waves, the pressures we face can connect us ever more strongly with the power of the God of all creation. He’s preparing us for something glorious that happens during storms all across our world.

Our waterspout is coming.

The very forces that bring about the storm also bring about the waterspout, lifting the very depths of the oceans from the deep, and thrusting them skyward. When our problems are at their worst is when we will feel the thrust of God’s mighty hand, and we will be flung from the depths of sorrow to the greatest height we’ve ever known.

It’s coming. Wait on it. Wait on it. When our salvation explodes all around us, our feet will never touch the ground again.

It’s the storm that builds our strength through Jesus Christ our Eternal Lord.
