Blown Away by God

Time covers everything. Literally.

Look to the great sphinx in Egypt. For centuries it was thought to be very small, with only part of the head showing. Sand had covered the massive monument, obscuring it for generations.

During its long history, Rome rebuilt itself over and over, covering its past with layers upon layers of new construction. Underneath the streets of the modern city, a vast palace complex hidden for a millennia reveals the grandeur of the ancient world.

No one knew of these magnificent edifices, because the debris of the years had filled them in. The residue had to be cleared away before the magnificence of the original creation could be beheld.

Our Christian walk is like Egypt’s sphinx and Rome’s underground palace complex. Over the years, small bits of debris, unnoticed at first, begin to gather. They clutter the path we walk, and eventually, as they build, our steps become more difficult. Eventually we cannot walk at all. Then the clutter of the world rises to our waist. One day we discover that only our head is showing. We can still call out the majesty of God’s presence in our life, but we’re so encumbered by the sand, by the trials of life, by the accumulation of sin we’ve allowed to build up, that our efforts to walk after God are hindered to the point of uselessness.

Our testimony for Christ has become a mere fragment of what it once was.

Psalm 18:15 tells us:

“Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at your rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.”

God can sweep all the debris clean, clearing the residue of the world away, leaving our foundation in him scoured and pure. Then we will show the glory of his presence in everything we do.

When we live next to God, the breath from his nostrils will keep the taint of the world from entangling us in our walk with him.
