Nine Ladies Dancing

The Twelve Days of Christmas is a traditional song for the holiday season. Each day in the song lists a different gift received over the course of the celebration. During the hundreds of years this song has been sung, the gifts have varied some, a few have changed position in the lineup, and a couple have been renamed due to the archaic terms originally used. However, none seem to have any real meaning except for joyful irreverence during the Christmas season.

The ninth gift we sing about is Nine Ladies Dancing. What spiritual meaning can we derive from the dancing ladies presented as a gift on the ninth day?

Look to Psalm 30:10-12. This passage was written 3,000 years ago by David to celebrate the dedication of the temple. However, it applies to today, as well.

We can dance before the Lord.

God had turned David’s sorrow around, and David danced with abandon, for his heart was glad in the Lord.

We can do the same. Trouble will come our way, for we are human. However, trouble doesn’t dictate our happiness. We can depend on God to lift our hearts with joy, for he is faithful to raise us up to ever-greater levels of delight.

Those Nine Ladies Dancing? They dance with the joy of the Lord, for the Savior is come, and he brings salvation to all mankind. We should dance also, for that salvation is ours.

When God brings us blessings, our praise should be spontaneous and visible to others. We should dance with abandon before our magnificent God.

Excerpt of the Day

When Jesus comes to us, we must be ready to respond to him in the moment of his passing.
