Even good things can hold us back.
The security of a job, perhaps one we don’t like. If we have a great idea but are unwilling to try something new, we’ll never know if we can.
Or a familiar house. We want to travel, but we’re afraid to risk giving up our home place. What if we can’t afford both?
Or friends … a haircut, either conservative or controversial … perhaps our favorite color or a controversial attitude.
Brandon Richardson worried that if he got a job, he would no longer receive his Social Security benefits. And if his job didn’t pan out … how would he contribute financially to his family?
Understand, receiving Social Security benefits is a good thing, but it was hamstringing Brandon’s independence. Brandon chose to participate in Discovery, a service of Tennessee’s First Choices Program, and has held the same job since 2019, even receiving the Employee of the Month award in June of 2021.
Exodus 32:18 describes our victory over the things that hold us back like this:
“It is not the sound of the cry of triumph, nor is it the sound of the cry of defeat; but the sound of singing I hear.”
Brandon stepped into his new job with confidence, and he has been on an upward trend ever since.
When we face obstacles in life, we must face them head on with joy, with singing, and with the enthusiasm that only comes from the Lord.
Let’s raise our hands in thanksgiving. Let’s let a song of joy fill our days. Let’s place our trust in God that the Victory will be ours!
