Cast Your Octopus Before the Victor

We chant “We will rock you!” at sporting events, and we do the wave to show our appreciation and enthusiasm for our favorite teams. We paint our faces in wild colors, and we sport crazy clothing just so everyone knows we are fans.

Once, throwing a hat onto the field was a sign of the fans’ approval. Today, if you visit San Jose, and you attend an ice hockey game, after a goal you might see fans throwing small sharks onto the ice. Head up to Nashville, and you’ll find catfish lobbed into the skaters’ slush. Farther east to Boston, and the fans enjoy tossing lobster onto the rink.

The most unusual fan appreciation in ice hockey is found in the city of Detroit. For over sixty years fans have rewarded playoff goals with dead octopuses.

What have these teams done that is deserving of such exuberant praise? Their victories may indeed reach the record books, but they are also very transitory.

It is the emotion of the moment that drives fans to show their appreciation in such unusual ways.

What do we do to show our appreciation to God? Do we throw sharks, catfish, lobster, or octopuses? Do we shout his name on the rooftops? Do we even raise our hands in church?

David, in Psalm 8:1-2, has no reservations in showing his praise to God. In these two verses he proclaims the excellence of God four distinct times:

#1 – God’s name is excellent in all the earth!

#2 – His glory is greater than all the heavens!

#3 – He gives strength to the weakest among us!

#4 – He crushes those who would come against us!

God is worth much more than a catfish or a dead octopus. He is worth our everlasting praise.

When Jesus comes to us, we must be ready to respond to him in the moment of his passing.
