Summer’s specific mixture of atmospheric conditions gives rise to the sound of THUNDER in the afternoon skies.
Heat and humidity at the surface invade very cold air high in the atmosphere. In violent updrafts, the power of the moving air rips additional heat from the cooler clouds, releasing even more power, resulting in magnificent displays of lightning and THUNDER.
No one can hide from this passionate display of God’s awesome power.
Let’s look at our THUNDER God:
T – He is the THUNDER that destroys our enemies.
In 1 Samuel 7:10 the Philistines battled against Israel. The THUNDER of the Lord rose into the heavens and brought about their defeat.
When God speaks, our enemies are vanquished, and we become victors.
H – He carries HEAT in his anger.
Deuteronomy 29:24 tells us God’s anger is filled with HEAT, and it rises against the enemies that stand before us.
As the thunder springs from the lightning, so God’s anger springs from his righteousness.
U – He resides in the UTTERMOST parts of the heavens.
No matter how far the storms of life scatter us, Nehemiah 1:9 tells us he will find us, even in the UTTERMOST reaches of creation.
We cannot be scattered so far that he cannot draw us back to him.
N – He is the coming darkness, even at the NOON hour.
Amos 8:9 reveals the gathering power of God’s vengeance, for it will rise against the sky, until even at NOON, no other besides God can be seen.
When God rises in his awesomeness, all must fade before him.
D – He DEVOURS the enemy who comes against us.
As a lion DEVOURS its prey, Hosea 13:8 assures us God goes before us, and our enemies will be utterly defeated.
As the thunder tells of the power of the storm, so the lion’s roar tells of coming death. Our enemies will quake in fear before our God.
E – He ESTABLISHES a covenant with us.
When the storms of life have battered us, and we turn to God for our redemption, Ezekiel 16:62 promises us he will ESTABLISH a covenant with us forever, so that we will know he is God.
In Noah’s time God sent the rainbow after the flood. We have the cross and the risen Savior.
R – He RULES by his great power.
Psalm 66:7 describes the truth of God’s being. He RULES not only by right, but also by his great power.
He asks us to give him what he has the right to take, for he wishes us to love him rather than live in fear of him.
God’s power is in the THUNDER that rolls across the heavens, but his love is in the gentle rain that comes after the storm.
