We can become inured to the most beautiful things.
They become background to us, and we forget to see them as the magnificent vistas they are.
Sunrises. We see one every day on the way to work, and soon, we don’t notice them at all.
Mountains become an ordinary backdrop when we drive them regularly. Soon, we see the street signs, the cars at our side, and the clouds overhead. The mountains are simply there.
Then there’s the oceans. We arrive for the first time, and we’re blown away. We can hardly stop staring at its beauty. Then, one day we get to lunch, and we realize we haven’t noticed the sea at all.
Psalm 119:18 tells us to open ourselves to the magnificent things of God.
“Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.”
At our first connection with Jesus, we are overwhelmed by his forgiveness, his acceptance, and his overflowing love. It’s beautiful to us, and we want to tell everyone.
Then we get back to life, and Jesus becomes part of the background of our days. He becomes the sunrise, the street sign, and the weather that sweeps by us. He’s just there, towering over us, and one day we wake up and don’t notice him at all.
Open our eyes, God, and reveal the wonder of who you are.
The beauty of our Christian experience requires us to keep our eyes open and pay attention to him every day.
We find the magnificence of God when we keep our eyes on him.
