What do we want? Yes, really want?
That’s easy. A bigger house, more money, and a newer car. Oh, and a beach house, or two. Then a vacation every year, and maybe we could do with a chunk of pocket change to spend however we like.
Yeah, that’s what we really want.
Psalm 37:4 tells us:
“Delight yourself also in the Lord: and he shall give you the desires of your heart.”
Hey, hey! We’re headed for the high life! We’re getting it all, baby! Yeah, thank you, Jesus!
Whoa! Back down, there, dumpling! Let’s look at that verse again. Delight yourself also in the Lord. What does that mean? (See where this is going?) It’s not about the stuff. If it takes stuff to make a Christian happy, then the Christian needs to find more delight in God. Yeah, in Jesus. In Christ. In the Holy Spirit. In missions. In feeding the hungry. In teaching a Sunday school class. In being an usher. In cleaning the restrooms when the Wednesday night classes clear the building.
Don’t worry. Our toes might have just gotten stepped on, but they’ll be fine. All we need to do is delight… in the Lord. When we reach that level of relationship with him, all the other stuff won’t matter, anyway. Christ will become the desire of our heart.
If we find our joy in our possessions, what does that say about our relationship with Christ? Let’s make him our all-in-all.
