There is an old children’s verse that goes something like this: April showers bring May flowers.
Just as the rain is vital to bringing the May flowers, our families and our jobs are what make life possible. Yet, when all the necessary minutiae of life leave their muddy prints strewn across our days, we have a God who can be there for us every step of the way.
Today we are going to look at our GALOSHES God.
G – He will GATHER us unto him.
Jesus’ words in Matthew 24:31 tell us that at the end of days, the Son of Man will descend from the clouds of heaven; he will carry great power and glory in his fist; a trumpet will sound; and he will GATHER us unto him.
When we are redeemed, we are part of the family of God. Our Father will not allow us to be separated from him.
A – He makes AMENDS for our sins.
Leviticus 5:16 reveals God’s plans for atonement. When we come to Jesus with a truly repentant heart, he will make AMENDS before the Father, and our sins will be forgiven.
We cannot clean all the muddy footprints from our lives, but Jesus can, if only we come to him with a contrite heart.
L – He LIFTS us up when we are down.
When David’s son Absalom rebelled against him, and David was on the run, in Psalm 3:3, he cried out to the Lord, “You, O God, are my shield, and it is you who LIFTS up my head unto the heavens.”
Life can be unfair, and friends can betray us. However, God is forever our strength and our encourager.
O – He gives us his OATH of blessing and prosperity.
In Genesis 26:3, the Lord spoke to Isaac, directing him to the land he had promised to his father Abraham. He made an OATH to bless Isaac and all his descendants, as long as he dwelled in the land.
If we follow the path God points out to us, his hand of blessing will be upon everything we do.
S – He SHINES his light upon us.
Jesus speaks of dark days in Matthew 24:27. However, he also gives encouragement, for he says the Son of Man comes as the lightning, and his light SHINES upon the whole world.
Even as the darkness seems to overtake us, Jesus’ power and glory will flash from the east to the west, and our footsteps will be lighted with his glory.
H – His ways are HIGHER than our ways.
Isaiah exhorts us to trust God when our days are dark with winter’s death and the goodness of spring seems far away. In Isaiah 55:9, we read that God’s ways are as the heavens above the earth, for they are HIGHER than our ways.
When the path we walk becomes no more than mud beneath our feet, we must remember that God has a plan, even if we cannot see it.
E – The power of God ENDURES forever.
In Psalm 9:6-7, we read that cities perish and memories fade, but God never forgets his children. He ENDURES forever, and he sits upon his throne until the end of time.
When the heavens seem to close to our prayers, and we doubt the existence of God, we must be reminded that he can never die, and his love for us is eternal.
S – He will SUBDUE all our enemies.
In 1 Chronicles 17:10, God tells David he will SUBDUE all his enemies and make of him a great house.
When the storms of life have lashed us, and we feel impending defeat, God has already made other plans.
The spring rains are necessary. However, when all we feel is the mud between our toes, God lifts us from the ground, and he carries us to the other side.
