God’s love that flowed through Jesus on the cross formed a foundational love. From the day of Jesus’ crucifixion, the Christian church established a foothold on the earth. From that leaping off point, Jesus’ followers were inspired to follow their Master’s example and love one another as Jesus had loved them.
Jesus’ death was, additionally, love in action. From his respectful words as he stood before Pilate to his accepting endurance as he endured the thirty-nine lashes, Jesus acted out his love. He carried his cross, let the Roman soldiers lash him to the tree, and invited the thief at his side to join him in heaven. He called out to God and forgave his tormentors, even as he gave up his life on the cross.
Romans 5:21 tells us:
“So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
The love of God that flowed through Jesus is a love that has endured. Even as he heard the sounds and felt the pain of his approaching death, Jesus’ love never wavered. Even in the Garden, when Peter cut off the ear of the servant of the high priest, Jesus felt compassion and love and healed the man’s injury.
Finally, the love of God through Jesus transcends all limitations. It’s been two thousand years since Christ walked the earth, and still, the example of love he demonstrated during his life and death resounds as loudly today as it did then. His love is unlimited by space, for there is no place on the earth mankind can travel that the love is God cannot reach. His love offers us eternal life and a relationship with him, if only we choose to accept his salvation.
Without the cross, humanity would still be lost. Thank God that his Son’s sacrifice became a vessel of his love poured out upon all humanity. With his sacrifice, I am forgiven, you are forgiven, and everyone who comes to him is forgiven.
