When a cook gathers the ingredients for a dish, she knows what each one will do when mixed into the final batter. Eggs will bind the mixture together, yeast will create a lightness of texture, and even the salt will bring out a level of flavor that would otherwise remain too subtle to find.
When God created man, he had no doubt that his eternal plan would come to fruition, for he knew from the beginning what each one of us would do when mixed into the final batter. Even before we came to know him, he wrote his precepts upon our hearts. Receiving Jesus as our savior was what allowed us to become part of the final dish, a magnificent culinary delight for all the world to enjoy.
We see this in Romans 2:15. Paul tells us that even those who do not know Christ as their savior still have the law of the Lord written on their hearts. How can we know this? By our very nature we do the things that God wrote into the Law. God gave us a conscience, and it serves as a guide even to the unbeliever.
Our conscience is not a reliable guide, though, nor is it a pathway to heaven. We can learn to ignore our conscience, or even sear it with repeated wrongdoing. It is only by the saving power of Christ that we are renewed day by day and we can walk in the fullness of his will.
It is in our salvation that we show the flavor of the Eternal God, one that would otherwise remain too subtle to find. Without him, we are nothing more than an egg in the refrigerator, waiting to be cracked and used for him.
God created us in his image, but salvation through Jesus allows us to become what God really wants us to be.
