Life in Christ

English Audio Version

Life and death. Polar opposites, right?

That’s how we speak of them. This is a life or death situation. We mean it’s “do or die.” Break the bank. This or that. There’s no in-between.

Polar opposites.

Yet, we speak of the worst situations in life as a “living death.”

What does that mean?

Take this example. A spouse dies, and we are heartbroken. Someone asks how we are, and we exclaim in our grief, “I wish I had died instead. This is a living death.”

What we mean is we are emotionally devastated. We are empty inside and can no longer see any good thing before us.

Life and death. Not a polar opposite in this case.

Spiritually, we can be caught up in the same conundrum. We walk, we talk, but we are spiritually dead inside. We have no spiritual connection with the heavenly Father, and we can see no spiritual future beyond what we can touch.

John 8:51 says:

“Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”

What does this verse mean? That we will never physically expire and be placed in a grave? Even Jesus faced that, as did every one of the Apostles, and we’re pretty certain they kept the word of the Lord.

What death will we not see? The living death, the walking and the talking with no spiritual connection to the Almighty God above.

What word must we keep to remain spiritually alive?

We must treat every person as we would wish to be treated and model our behavior after the example of Christ.

We have life in Christ when we are spiritually connected with our Lord.
