If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears, does it make a sound?
That’s a fun question. It has nothing to do, however, with the aftereffects of the tree’s demise. The tree stood amid its fellows, and now it doesn’t. It will begin to decay, eventually returning to the forest floor, and will disappear completely.
How will we know the tree was even there? Can we verify its life and death, if no one hears the trunk crack, the branches shift and catch the wind, and the leaf-laden boughs rip through neighboring trees, tearing at them as it tumbles wildly through the canopy and to the ground far below?
Who can speak for the existence of the tree, if the tree doesn’t make its existence known?
Romans 10:10 tells us the Christian must speak out. We must use our voice to tell the world of our belief in Christ. Just to feel love for the Master isn’t enough. We are saved through our confession.
“For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”
We are to live by example. To say we believe in Christ and not live it out makes us useless for him. To believe and not speak our faith aloud is equally pointless. We must do both, if we want the world to come to Jesus.
Our spoken confession is our heart connection to the Christ who died upon the cross.
