Stamina.
We can think of it as showing a little backbone. Exhibiting strength of character.
Having a backbone of steel means we don’t compromise no matter what comes against us. We recognize the comic book hero known as the Man of Steel. He carries greater strength and power because he lives under a yellow sun. In the real world, the steel plating in flak jackets can repel all but the most powerful of projectiles.
When we want the most, we go for steel. There’s not much that’s stronger than that heat-forged material.
Rahab the harlot was a woman doomed. Her city was about to come down. Jericho’s walls were ready to fall. There was one way only that Rahab could survive. She had to cast aside all her perceived protections and give in to God.
Joshua 2:11 tells us Rahab’s words:
“And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the Lord your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.”
Jericho was a fortified city with massive walls. All the city fathers had to do was close the gates, and her populace was secured. Who had anything to fear from a band of roving migrants who marched and sang as they circled the city day after day?
Only Rahab saw the truth. Giving in to God was the only way to survive the coming calamity. If she depended on the strength of the city’s walls, she would die with the rest of her people.
We are in the same position. If we think our bank accounts, our insurance policies, and our investments in the markets will keep us safe, we are sadly mistaken. One day the hand of our returning King will sweep aside the strutting minions of the evil one, and the world will be scoured free from sin. Christ will sit upon his throne, and our world will be made new in him.
We can join him. It’s called salvation. When we repent of our sins, ask for forgiveness, and give in to God, we become part of him, and we will one day rule at his side forever more.
We don’t need a breastplate of steel to protect us. Christ our King does a much better job.
Letting Jesus take first place in our lives lets him surround us with his glory, giving us total protection from the ravages of the devil.
