Putting God in His Place

Organization is all the rage.

Experts make a living showing others how to organize their lives into manageable moments. Our morning is for ourselves, and we don’t take calls on the drive to work. We carve out time for yoga, and Friday night is date night.

Our homes are the same. The toys go in the game room, the laundry in the hamper, and all things Christmas are shuffled into the attic on December 26th.

What shelf do we leave for God? Is he in the bookcase next to the fireplace, there to be admired by all who come over, even taken down at Easter and Pentecost, only to be tucked neatly away when we’re done?

Have we put God in his place, and we enjoy him there, but nowhere else?

Amos tells the words of Amaziah the priest of Beth-el in Amos 7:13:

“But prophesy not again at Beth-el: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.”

Amaziah is saying that God has no authority in the king’s court. What’s the king’s is the king’s, and what’s God’s is God’s, and the two are separate.

Do we give Sunday to God, but keep Saturday for ourselves? Do we drop a $20 in the offering plate, but keep the thousands for ourselves? Do we say a prayer before meals, but keep our bedtime for the Tonight Show? Is what’s ours ours, and what’s God’s is God’s, and the two are separate?

Or are we God’s, totally and without reservation?

Maybe it’s time to reorganize our lives. We have an expert, and his name is Jesus. He says to “Come,” and he holds out his hand for us to join him. He wants to reorganize our lives so that he is first. There’s no more room for “God in his place” on the top shelf, no matter how much honor we give him there. God belongs on our sofa, in our Saturdays, and with us at the movie theater. God belongs in every part of who we are.

Salvation’s first priority is to reorder our lives. If we’re not different, we’re not saved.
