The auctioneer rattles off his enticements in a sing-song voice, tempting us to partake of his wares…
Come on…who’ll give me five…only five for a great deal…going once, twice…do I see ten back there? Ten, and it’s a deal at twice the price. Who’ll give me fifteen…once, twice, sold to the man with the gleam in his eye!
We all want good value, both as a seller and a buyer. Auctions can be great avenues to unload our wares, but finding a collector who wants what we’re selling can bring us a higher price.
Who wants what we have to offer as human beings? Our lives, the deeds we do every day, even the thoughts we think. Who is willing to bid a good offer for what we’re selling?
Romans 7:14 tells us:
“For we know that the Law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.”
Paul is telling us that there is a difference between spirit and flesh. The Law is the spoken word of God, inviolate, and created of things insubstantial and holy. We are the result of Adam’s fall. When the auctioneer’s gavel fell, we were purchased by the law of flesh and blood. Even spirit-filled believers can’t keep the laws of God outside of faith in the power of the cross.
The truth is that we are born of a sinful nature, and to our sinful nature we’ll always want to return. Only Christ can give us the motivation to be good and pure before him, to find our satisfaction in the will of the Father, and to always abide in prayer and good deeds performed for our fellow man.
Once, twice, sold! The gavel falls, and a new buyer is in place. This buyer is a collector who sees our true value. When we come to the altar to offer ourselves to Jesus, he becomes our new owner, the master of all that we are, and our king. He paid with his blood on the cross, and there’s no higher price anyone can offer.
Christ rewrites our deed of ownership, and he signs his name in the blood of the Lamb for all to see.
