Breathing in the Breath of God

It’s that first breath of life that’s so special. Our son or daughter is born, and while they’ve been alive for nine months, we don’t think of it that way. For us, the moment they’re born happens when they burst forth into that first vibrant cry, screaming out to the world that they’re alive.

How special to God was that moment his creation drew its first breath?

Genesis 2:7 tells us:

“Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.”

Imagine our own newborn, and the excitement coursing through our veins. That baby exists for the very first time, and everything is new to it. It will never have another chance to experience life for the very first time.

It triggers something in us. We want to care for and protect our little bundle of life, to give it everything it needs, and to be there for it when it cries.

We grow to love it more deeply every single day.

How much has God grown to love humanity in the eons we’ve been here on this earth?

Psalm 23:1-6 tells us:

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

We want to take care of our own children, from the first breath they take. God breathed the breath of life into our nostrils. He made us into living creatures.

How much more must he love us?

God loved humanity before we were born, and when we breathed in our first breath of life, his love for us became an overwhelming flood that pours down on us each moment of every day.

If something leads us astray, toss it aside and leave it on the side of the road.
