One Spoken Word

Those of us old enough to remember will recognize the marketing ad, “No one can eat just one.”

It was about a brand of potato chips, saying that if we ever got a taste of one, we’d want another and another, and so on.

How about the sounds of appreciation? Scientists have proven that to mature properly, children need to be patted on the back, encouraged, and to have their successes congratulated. To do it properly, there are a lot of words involved.

Politicians are particularly good at using words. They can say one thing to the breakfast crowd, another to the lunch bunch, and yet a third thing to those who gather around at dinner. Words can convey so many things that they sometimes feel like magic working their way into our ears.

Then there’s the church. How many rules and regulations do we need to ensure we make it to heaven? We have to wear this, don’t do that, or act a certain way on a particular day of the week.

How is it then that Christ only requires one word to draw us to him? Read of it in Revelation 22:17:

“The Spirit and the Bride say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.”

Following Christ isn’t like eating a bag of potato chips, where we must consume more and more to ensure our salvation. The Word of God declares that if we do this one thing, come to him, he will gift us with his total and uncompromised salvation. He won’t put restrictions on it, and he won’t raise the price. He will simply make it available for us to take anytime we want.

Following Jesus is wrapped up in that one amazing word. Come. The King James Version of the Word says it best in Matthew 11:28:

“Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

It’s up to us. When we step forward, his gift is ready for us to receive. He’s already offered it. All we need to do is reach out our hands and take it.

Salvation isn’t complicated. It’s just reaching out and accepting what Christ has already offered to the world.

Excerpt of the Day

If something leads us astray, toss it aside and leave it on the side of the road.
