Small children are cute. That’s science. It has nothing to do with whether they look like their mother or father. It’s about ratio.
Yes, ratio, that math concept we left behind in sixth grade. How much of this physical feature do we exhibit in comparison to that? We can also call it proportion. Think of fractions. Percents. Each of these has a slightly different connotation, but they are all essentially the same.
Ratios. The measure of cuteness in small children.
It’s more obvious to us in the animal kingdom. Lions are big and rangy, massive creatures that are magnificent but scary. Who doesn’t see a lion cub scampering about and think, “How adorable,” and want to give it a tussle?
Kittens. Puppies. Even baby chicks, covered with down. We love them because of the ratios of their bodies. It’s hardwired into us to see their outsized eyes and their disproportionately small bodies, and our hearts melt. We want to touch them, to cuddle them in our hands, and to protect them.
It’s all about the ratios, and God loves us for the same reason.
Titus 3:5 tells us:
“He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.”
It’s all about the ratio of who he is compared to who we are. God sees us, and his heart just melts. It’s hardwired in. He loves us because our human part is bigger than our spiritual part, and it’s in his nature to protect us until we can mature into spiritual adults.
Matthew 11:28 is the evidence of his melting heart.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
How’s that for a good cuddle? All he wants from us is to hug him back.
1 John 4:15 shows us the simplicity of it all:
“Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.”
God is drawn to us because of math. Ratios. Percentages of how much we need him simply because we’re human. He sees us, helpless in our need, and loves us, simply because we’re here.
How’s that for a math lesson we can wrap our arms around?
We can’t earn God’s love. It’s simply there, because we are who we are.
