The Market Value of a Soul

Market value is what something’s worth on the open market. In other words, what are people willing to pay for what we have to sell?

An auction tells the truth of the situation. The market value of an object can vary from day to day. Sometimes that value is based on what’s popular at the moment. Other times the value can rise and fall depending on the scarcity of an item.

Oil is an excellent example. For decades, the United States produced oil in abundance, and the price was low. When production began to fall, we searched out new supplies.

Other countries knew we needed more than we could supply all by ourselves, and prices climbed to the sky.

Decades later, we learned how to process our natural oil resources more efficiently, and we no longer needed to depend so strongly on foreign oil. Prices began to fall, as we needed less and less.

That’s market value, simple and pure.

What’s the market value of our souls? Is it on the rise, or are souls becoming cheaper by the decade?

1 Peter 1:18 lists two of the most valuable metals on the earth: silver and gold. These are stockpiled to ensure financial security in countries across the globe. If countries really want to make vital financial transactions, then silver and gold are the reigning royalty.

Our souls are worth so much that silver and gold aren’t valued highly enough to complete the transaction. Verse 19 tells us something more valuable: the blood of Jesus Christ.

When our souls came up for auction two millennia ago, the devil threw out 30 pieces of silver, hoping to complete the deal. However, on the cross, Jesus offered his blood. The gavel struck three times, and the deal was done.

Our souls don’t go cheaply. They are bought with the ultimate price: the bone and marrow, the sweat and tears, and the very blood of Jesus Christ.

The deal’s already done. All we have to do is sign our name and walk away with salvation in our pockets.

God values us highly enough that he sent his Son to die for us.
