Working to Get Ahead

Laziness does no one any good.

Imagine having a new fence delivered to our yard, and there it sits, neatly stacked in back of the house, just waiting to be installed. We’ve paid for it, it’s of the best quality, but the Steelers game calls to us. Rather than rolling up our sleeves and pulling out our hammer, we search for the remote and settle in with a bag of chips.

That’s good and well, but what about the next weekend when it’s Olympic swimming, and of course, our brother’s barbecue is the following week. No way are we going to miss that.

And soon, the summer gets away, and there our fence is, still stacked in the yard.

Laziness does no one any good.

So, how hard do we have to work for our salvation? Does it take as much effort as building that fence, if we could ever get off our sofa to get it done?

Hardly! It’s like it takes no work at all!

Check this out, you barbecue-loving fans:

Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us our salvation is the gift of God, and we cannot get it by working for it.

Mark 10:25-27 says we cannot purchase salvation, nor can we earn it. It comes through God.

Romans 11:6 assures us that if our salvation can be earned by hard work, there is no place for grace in our salvation.

Galatians 2:16 makes no bones about it. We are justified by our faith, and not by any works we do.

2 Timothy 1:9 names our salvation a holy calling, one that does not come according to our works.

Even little Titus gets a word in, for it is by mercy Jesus saves us, and we are renewed by the Holy Spirit.

Now, that fence does need to be put up someday, just as our Sunday schools need teachers and the church lawn needs mowed. However, we can’t do those things and expect to get into heaven on that alone. No, it takes something much more important.

It takes the free grace of our Almighty God!

Jesus offers us salvation for free. We give back to him because we love him.
