Putting Money on It

When we buy a house, one of the first steps is showing the seller that we are serious. We give them a check called earnest money. The term means exactly what it says, that we are in earnest about buying the house. We are serious, and we are willing to risk a small stake to prove it.

We are putting our money where our mouth is. We are showing that we are certain in our choice. We know it surely, undoubtedly, for a fact, and there’s no question about it.

However, if the seller waffles, saying, “Oh, I’ve thought about not selling. I just don’t know,” we will move on to another house. We want to be convinced that house can really be ours. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Now let’s turn that to our salvation. We have to be convinced it’s real, or what’s the point in our spiritual earnest money check?

Yes, we've all put down spiritual earnest money. We invest our time in the fourth grade Sunday school class or in the Buckaroo Boys on Wednesday night. We drop in a twenty when the offering plate comes around, and that special offering for the visiting missionary? Our check always finds its way onto the plate as it goes by.

If our salvation is a maybe thing, why would we bother?

So, how can we be certain? Check out these five verses:

Salvation Assurance #1:

John 5:24 tells us, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.”

Salvation Assurance #2:

John 10:28 assures us, “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”

Salvation Assurance #3:

1 John 5:13 is our promise that “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.”

Salvation Assurance #4:

Romans 10:13 gives us the confidence that “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Salvation Assurance #5:

Ephesians 2:8-9 leaves no room for doubt. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Back to that house. If we are seriously in the market, and we find a house we like, we can’t hesitate. We’ve got to “jump on it.” That means we have to move in fast and offer the best price we can.

Our time…our family…our tithes. What’s our salvation worth to us? What we offer as earnest money tells the truth of the matter.

What we offer to Jesus is no more than a down payment on the best deal in town.
